2nd November 1956: Sam finds himself in the body of Chance Terrance Cole, a forty-year-old petty thief sentenced to nine months on a chain-gang in Talawaga County, a state bordering on Louisiana. Chance is in the middle of an escape attempt chained to fellow prisoner Jasper Boone, and together they flee into the woods, pursued by armed warders and tracker dogs. Al arrives and informs Sam that he must prove Boone’s innocence: the man was wrongly convicted of armed robbery, and the real robber is still at large and committing further crimes. Learning that Boone is destined to be shot in the next five minutes, Al distracts the tracker dogs and changes history; however, success is short-lived, as Sam and Boone are then recaptured and imprisoned in ’The Hole, a water-filled cage in the ground. While a night in The Hole is a horrible experience for Sam, it proves traumatic for the claustrophobic Boone…
